Can Water Chemistry Tell You If Your Pool Has a Leak?

The Chemistry May Not Tell You Where the Leak Is…

But It Can Tell You That Water Is Disappearing.

One of the most overlooked tools for finding a pool leak isn’t a pressure tester or a dye syringe.

It’s your water chemistry.

No, chemistry usually can’t tell you whether the leak is in the skimmer, light niche, plumbing, or shell.

But it can often tell you that your pool is losing water—and replacing it with fresh water—long before the leak becomes obvious.

If you keep accurate historical water test records, your chemistry may become the first warning sign that something is wrong.


Calcium Hardness: One of the Best Leak Indicators

Here in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, our tap water typically contains around 150 ppm Calcium Hardness (CH), although that varies depending on the city and water source.

A new plaster pool is usually adjusted to around 250–300 ppm to help support the plaster curing process while providing a better starting point for maintaining a proper LSI (Langelier Saturation Index).

Here’s what happens naturally over time.

When water evaporates…

Only the water leaves.

The calcium stays behind.

Then the auto-fill or garden hose replaces that evaporated water with fresh tap water—which contains more calcium.

That means the pool slowly accumulates calcium over time.

In North Texas, it’s completely normal to see Calcium Hardness gradually increase month after month.

Eventually, after several years, calcium may become high enough that a partial drain and refill is needed.


When Calcium Starts Going Down…

That’s when I start paying attention.

If Calcium Hardness begins dropping week after week, something has changed.

There are only a handful of common explanations.

It could be:

  • Heavy swimmer splash-out
  • Large rain events causing overflow
  • A stuck or improperly adjusted auto-fill
  • Someone accidentally leaving the garden hose running
  • Frequent draining or backwashing
  • Or…
  • A leak

Whenever higher-calcium pool water leaves the pool and lower-calcium tap water replaces it, the Calcium Hardness begins falling.

That drop becomes one of the chemical fingerprints of water loss.


Cyanuric Acid (CYA) Can Tell the Same Story

Cyanuric Acid—also called stabilizer or conditioner—behaves similarly.

Like calcium…

CYA does not evaporate.

It only leaves when water leaves.

Pools that use mostly liquid chlorine will naturally lose small amounts of CYA over time because of:

  • Rain overflow
  • Splash-out
  • Vacuuming to waste
  • Filter backwashing
  • Water replacement

That’s completely normal.

Occasionally adding a little stabilizer is expected.

But if CYA suddenly begins falling much faster than that pool’s normal pattern…

Water is leaving the pool.


Pools Using Trichlor or Dichlor

This becomes even more interesting.

If the pool is regularly sanitized with:

  • Trichlor tablets
  • Dichlor shock

Those products constantly ADD Cyanuric Acid.

Normally…

CYA should slowly climb over time.

So if a pool is continuously adding stabilizer…

Yet the CYA level is actually falling…

That’s a huge red flag.

The pool is losing more stabilized water than the chlorine products are replacing.

Again…

That points toward:

  • Overflow
  • Excessive splash-out
  • Draining
  • Or a leak

The Auto-Fill Can Fool You

One of the sneakiest problems I see isn’t actually a broken pool.

It’s a misadjusted auto-fill.

If the auto-fill maintains the water level slightly above its proper operating height, water constantly spills into the overflow.

The homeowner never notices.

The water level always looks perfect.

But chemically…

The pool behaves exactly like it has a leak.

Treated water continuously leaves.

Fresh tap water continuously replaces it.

Your chemistry tells the story long before anyone notices the water bill.


Higher Chlorine Demand Can Also Be a Clue

Leaks don’t consume chlorine.

That’s an important distinction.

The leak isn’t destroying chlorine.

It’s carrying chlorinated water out of the pool.

Fresh fill water comes in with essentially no chlorine.

The larger the leak…

The more chlorine your service technician has to add just to maintain the normal target level.

If a pool suddenly becomes difficult to keep chlorinated…

I immediately begin watching two numbers much more closely:

  • Calcium Hardness
  • Cyanuric Acid

Those trends often tell me more than today’s chlorine reading.


Don’t Chase One Test Result

One abnormal water test doesn’t prove anything.

Testing variation happens.

Pools overflow.

Kids splash.

Rain falls.

People leave hoses running.

Families have pool parties.

Context matters.

I’m looking for patterns.

If Calcium Hardness is consistently dropping…

When it normally should be rising…

AND…

CYA is also dropping faster than expected…

The pool is almost certainly exchanging water somewhere.

Once you’ve ruled out heavy rain, overflow, intentional draining, and excessive splash-out…

A leak becomes the most likely explanation.


Now It’s Time to Find the Leak

Once chemistry strongly suggests water loss, it’s time to stop treating this as simply a chemistry issue.

Begin the leak detection process.

Start with:

  • A bucket test or Leakalyzer
  • Inspect the equipment pad
  • Check the backwash valve for bypassing
  • Inspect the overflow
  • Verify the auto-fill adjustment
  • Inspect skimmers
  • Check return fittings
  • Inspect lights
  • Look over any exposed plumbing

If water loss is confirmed…

The next steps may include:

  • Dye testing
  • Plumbing isolation
  • Pressure testing
  • Professional electronic leak detection

Water chemistry won’t tell you whether the leak is behind the light niche or under the deck.

But it often tells you the pool is losing water long before the leak becomes visible.


Historical Water Testing Is Extremely Valuable

This is one of the biggest reasons I believe in consistent professional water testing and keeping accurate records.

Don’t just look at today’s numbers.

Watch where they’re headed.

Sometimes…

The chemistry is the very first thing telling you that your pool has a leak.

When you learn to recognize those trends, you can catch problems earlier, reduce water loss, save money, and avoid much larger repairs later.
